Happy Sunday, Kind souls of Tucson!
As the holidays draw near and time with family and friends becomes more frequent, it’s a beautiful opportunity to soften, reflect, and come back to what truly matters.
At the same time, this season can make our inner dialogue louder. Family gatherings can gently—or not so gently—press old buttons. Memories resurface. Comparisons sneak in. Expectations rise.
This is often when our self-talk becomes the harshest.
If you notice that happening, pause. Take a breath. Remind yourself that the voice inside you deserves just as much kindness as the people sitting around your table.
The way you speak to yourself matters more than you realize.
Every quiet thought, every inner comment, every unconscious judgment is shaping how you experience your life.
For many of us, this inner conversation has been running on autopilot for years—often filled with self-criticism, doubt, and unrealistic expectations. Over time, this internal language slowly wears down our sense of self-worth.
But here’s the good news:
You can change the conversation.
And when you do, everything begins to shift.

🕊️ The Quiet Power of Self-Talk
We think thousands of thoughts each day, and many of them are repetitive. When those thoughts lean negative—“I’m not good enough,” “I always mess this up,” “Why can’t I get it together?”—they don’t just pass through. They settle in.
Your mind doesn’t know the difference between a fact and a thought you repeat often. What you tell yourself again and again becomes what you believe.
That’s why self-talk isn’t “just thinking.”
It’s programming.
💖Becoming Aware of Your Inner Patterns
Catastrophizing: “I made one mistake, so everything is ruined.”
All-or-nothing thinking: “If I’m not perfect, I’m a failure.”
Negative filtering: Ignoring compliments but replaying criticism.
Personalization: “That didThe first step toward changing your inner dialogue is noticing it—without judgment.
Most self-critical thoughts fall into familiar patterns, such as:
n’t go well because of me.”
“Should” statements: “I should be further along by now.”
A simple practice:
For a few days, gently notice your thoughts when something feels uncomfortable. You don’t need to write them down if that feels like too much—just observe. You may start to see the same phrases and themes repeating.
Awareness alone begins the healing.
🌿Gentle Ways to Transform Your Self-Talk
Once you notice your patterns, you can begin to soften them—one sentence at a time.
1. Create a little distance
When a harsh thought arises, try shifting how you speak to yourself.
Instead of “I’m so stupid for messing this up,” try:
“You’re having a hard moment, and that’s okay.”
This small shift invites compassion instead of criticism.
2. Question absolute thinking
Words like always, never, totally, and completely can quietly trap us.
“I always fail” → “I’ve struggled with this before.”
“I’ll never figure this out” → “I’m still learning.”
Truth is usually softer than our inner critic makes it.
3. Speak to yourself like someone you love
If a dear friend came to you with the same problem, would you talk to them the way you talk to yourself?
Probably not.
Offer yourself the same kindness you give so freely to others.
4. Replace judgment with observation
Notice what happened without attacking who you are.
“I’m lazy” → “I didn’t get done what I hoped today.”
“I’m bad at this” → “This is something I’m still practicing.”
This keeps your self-worth intact while allowing growth.
5. Add the word “yet”
This tiny word opens doors.
“I don’t understand this” → “I don’t understand this yet.”
“I’m not there” → “I’m not there yet.”
Growth lives in that space.
🦋The Ripple Effect
At first, this new way of speaking to yourself may feel awkward—or even fake. That’s normal. You’re interrupting an old habit.
But over time, something beautiful happens.
Your inner voice begins to soften.
Mistakes feel less threatening.
Challenges feel more manageable.
Self-worth stops feeling fragile.
This isn’t about pretending life is easy or ignoring what needs healing. It’s about meeting yourself with respect, patience, and compassion—especially when things aren’t perfect.
The relationship you have with yourself sets the tone for everything else in your life.
Make it a conversation rooted in kindness.
You deserve that.

Final Thoughts
As we move through this holiday season, remember that the way you speak to yourself matters—especially during moments of reflection, family gatherings, and emotional tenderness. You don’t have to be perfect, healed, or “together” to be worthy of kindness. Start with your own inner voice.
May this season remind you to slow down, soften, and offer yourself the same love you so freely give to others. Small shifts in self-talk can create meaningful changes, not just during the holidays, but long after they pass.
From my heart to yours, Merry Christmas.
May your days be filled with warmth, peace, and gentle words—within and around you.
Thank you for spending time with me.
With Warm Holiday Wishes,
Tomoko 🤍
